MADRID ABSENT AS EFA RELEASES 2026 SCHEDULE

The reason behind the apparent delay in finalising the inaugural European Football Alliance schedule became apparent as soon as it appeared.

What should have been a seven-team competition featured only six franchises on the belated fixture list, with the Madrid Bravos conspicuous by their absence as a result of an unexpected decision by the team’s owners to ‘formally withdraw from sports ownership’.

In conjunction with the season launch, the EFA and the ownership group of the Madrid Bravos jointly announce that the Bravos will not compete in the 2026 season,” a statement accompanying the schedule release confirmed. “The Madrid Bravos have played an instrumental role in elevating the profile of the sport in Spain [and] we thank the ownership group for their vision and contribution. The EFA remains deeply committed to Spain as a vital growth market and, with the NFL’s upcoming presence in Madrid, the foundation for the sport in the region remains exceptionally strong.”

Undeterred by the development, and the ongoing uncertainty over the plans of the European League of Football — which insists that it has valid contracts requiring several EFA teams to compete in its competition — the Alliance has pressed on with planning for its inaugural season. As a result, fans across the continent will be able to ‘witness a concentrated, high-intensity competition’, featuring six of Europe’s elite franchises.

Despite the likes of Vienna and Rhein contesting the rival AFLE season, the EFA continues to boast the Prague Lions, Paris Musketeers, Frankfurt Galaxy, Munich Ravens, Raiders Tirol and Nordic Storm, who will contest a revised 10-game, double round-robin format played over a 13-week regular season schedule, including a mid-summer league-wide bye week.

Despite the refined league footprint, every match-up continues to present a high-stakes clash between the premier talent in European American football, kicking off over the weekend of 15-17th May. The opening game, perhaps unsurprisingly given the driving forces behind the league, will feature the Frankfurt Galaxy hosting the Paris Musketeers in a ‘Friday Night Lights’ contest on 15th May, with one game apiece on the ensuing Saturday – Nordic Storm vs Prague Lions — and Sunday, where the Munich Ravens host Raiders Tirol.

Beyond the regular season, meanwhile, the EFA intends to revolutionise the playoff experience by introducing two destination ‘Party Weekends’, designed to unite fans from every corner of Europe for a celebration of sport and culture

The Frankfurt Playoff Weekend, slated for 15-16th August at PSD Bank Arena will not only host both semi-final knockout games, but will be anchored by a massive league-wide Fan Party in the heart of Frankfurt on Saturday night.

The first-ever EFA Championship Game has yet to have its details finalised, with date and host city to be announced in the very near future.
