MARINERS MYSTERY DEEPENS
It is still unclear whether the Monaco Mariners are any more than the figment of someone’s admittedly creative imagination but, whatever the case, the apparent AFLE hopeful appears to be having second thoughts.
Some 24 hours after a countdown on the Mariners Instagram feed — the ‘club’ has been impressively represented on social media throughout — hinted at its unveiling as the latest member of The League: Europe, a two-page missive reports that a reconsideration is now underway.
The post coincides with the first appearance on social media of a second Monaco franchise, the Royal Knights, who claim to have installed former San Francisco 49ers and Rhein Fire head coach Jim Tomsula in a similar role. Tomsula has long been linked to a return to Europe via Monaco but, as no team had been announced, exact details remained a mystery. Initial conclusions suggest that the Mariners believed that they would be the AFLE addition, but have been usurped by the Royal Knights.
Or it could all be the latest stage in a long-running charade, with the Mariners ‘dream’ being shutdown by the emergence of what could be the ‘real’ expansion franchise…
All we have to go on is the following:
“Dear Monaco Mariners Family, Partners, Fans, and Visionaries,
“Today, we stand at a crossroads — a moment that demands transparency, courage and an unshakable belief in the future we are building together. It is with a mix of determination and disappointment that we must announce a strategic pivot to our operational roadmap, driven by unforeseen challenges that have tested the very core of our mission.
“From the inception of the Monaco Mariners, we embarked on this journey fuelled by unbridled passion, unwavering trust and a vision to redefine American football in Europe. Our ambition was never just to build a team — it was to craft a legacy, to elevate the sport and to inspire a continent. And let us be clear: that passion burns brighter than ever. It is the lifeblood of this organisation, the fire that drives us forward and the promise we make to you, our loyal community.
“However, we confront a harsh reality. The foundation of trust upon which we sought to build our dream has been eroded. The landscape we navigated was one fraught with opaque agreements, restrictive covenants and partnerships that failed to align with our values of integrity, fairness and mutual respect. In an environment where contracts are either painfully transparent in their one-sidedness or shrouded in fine-print exploitation, we refuse to compromise the principles that define us.
“Under these circumstances, it is with a heavy heart — but an unbroken spirit — that we must reassess our immediate plans. The path forward is not the one we originally envisioned, but rest assured, it is one we will forge with the same relentless ambition that has always defined the Monaco Mariners.
“A HEARTFELT THANK YOU
“To our players, who have trained with grit and heart, believing in a vision that transcends borders — thank you. Your dedication is the cornerstone of this organisation, and we will fight relentlessly to give you the platform you deserve.
“To our coaches, who have poured their expertise, wisdom, and passion into shaping not just athletes, but leaders — thank you. Your guidance lights our way forward.
“To our partners, who saw the potential in our mission and stood by us — thank you. Your belief in us is a testament to the power of shared dreams, and we will honour that belief with action.
“And to our fans, the lifeblood of the Monaco Mariners — thank you. Your passion fuels us, your voices inspire us and your loyalty reminds us every day why we embarked on this journey.
“THE FUTURE IS OURS TO WRITE
We will not waver. We will not falter. We will adapt, evolve, and emerge stronger.
“The Monaco Mariners are not just a team — we are a movement, a symbol of what is possible when passion meets purpose. And while the road ahead may be unpaved, we are armed with vision, fortified by resilience and driven by an unshakable belief in the future we are creating together.
“Stay tuned. The best is yet to come.
“With unwavering passion and boundless gratitude,
“The Monaco Mariners Family.”

ELF and AFLE follower Dirk Jaschok has already called the Mariners out as fake on his Facebook forum, pointing to another elaborate Instagram post, which claimed that the team’s first game would take place in April, as proof. With the AFLE not expected to kick off until mid-May at the earliest, and training camps scheduled to commence in April, is this the slip-up that undermines the Mariners as a hoax?
Jaschok also reported that, according to his sources, ‘the AFLE team from the city state of Monaco is still in the internal voting process and will only appear publicly in a few days and then present the real team name and the associated logo’. The only action over the festive period, however, was the belated confirmation that the Vienna Vikings would be the sixth confirmed team on the AFLE roster. The league has announced that its proposed Paris franchise will be revealed on Super Bowl Sunday (8th February), but there is so far no further news regarding potential teams in the UK and Italy.
Further confusion surrounds the lineups in both the AFLE and ELF given reports that the latter is no more. As explained here, there are a couple of possible reasons for this, but the prospect of the six EFA-aligned teams looking for a new home remains a possibility.
