MERCENARIES NAME HEAD COACH
The Helvetic Mercenaries believe that they have made a strong sporting statement by signing former NFL player Tony Simmons as their latest head coach.
The Swiss franchise, gearing up for another season in the European League of Football in the wake of a torrid 2025 campaign, have reported a steady slew of player signings over the past couple of weeks, but the Simmons hiring adds another layer of credibility to their quest.
The new head coach brings decades of experience from the highest level of the game. As a wide receiver in the NFL, he spent time with the New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and New York Giants, gaining valuable insights into the structures, training methods and performance requirements of professional football.
After retiring as a player, Simmons pursued a coaching career and established himself as an internationally-recognised football expert, having worked with various overseas leagues and teams as head coach, offensive coordinator and position coach, developing both professional players and ambitious young talent.
Simmons’ coaching style is characterised by clear structure, high discipline, a modern playing philosophy and a strong team culture, all things the Mercenaries will look to build upon as they attempt to resurrect the franchise.
“With Tony Simmons, we are gaining a head coach who knows professional football first-hand,” team management claimed in an official statement. “His NFL experience, combined with his international coaching career, will be a crucial factor in the Mercenaries’ athletic direction and development.”
Simmons will not only be responsible for the team’s performance on the field, but will also play a significant role in developing the team culture, player development, professional training and game preparation. His focus will be on sustainable performance building, defining clear roles within the team and establishing a competitive identity within the ELF.
Simmons assumes his new role with immediate effect and is now responsible for the complete athletic preparation for the upcoming 2026 season, as the Mercenaries look to establish themselves as a viable ELF franchise.
