‘MONSTER SIGNINGS’ FOR VIKINGS
The Vienna Vikings continue to make a strong statement on both sides of the ball ahead of the inaugural American Football League season, inking wide receiver Philipp Haun and defensive back Marloshawn Franklin Jr to an already-stacked roster.
The Austrian team is hoping that both additions will be immediate difference-makers for the 2026 campaign, with both bringing vast experience to the capital.
Haun has marked himself out as one of the most successful Austrian receivers of recent years, having begun his career in 2012 with the Danube Dragons and, most recently, played for the Raiders Tirol in the European League of Football between 2022-25. At the international level, the 5’9”, 185kg pass catcher was able to celebrate success as a team captain on the IFAF European champion Austrian national team in 2023 and 2025.
“The Vikings have been a top team ever since I started following European football,” Haun said. “Being able to continue my career with such a professional franchise makes me very happy. We want to be the best team in Europe and show everyone where the best football is played.”
Head coach Chris Calaycay sees not only athletic ability in his new receiver but also praises Haun’s leadership qualities.
“Philipp is one of those special players, and his value to our franchise will be immediately noticeable on the field, as he is one of the best homegrown receivers in Europe,” the American noted. “I am even more excited about the skill, work ethic and leadership qualities he will bring to this team, and can’t wait to see him play for our franchise.”
Calaycay was equally effusive about the Vikings’ latest addition to the secondary, branding Franklin Jr as ‘exceptional’.
“Marlowshawn is one of those players you just have to see live,” the head coach pointed out. “He’s explosive around the ball and has the tools that we’re looking for in a playmaker in our secondary. He’s as versatile and physical as any DB you’ll see in Europe.”
Franklin Jr has signed a Vikings contract through 2027 and brings impressive experience to the AFLE squad. Having made the NFL, he played for teams including the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers while, in the Canadian Football League, he played for the BC Lions, Ottawa Redblacks, Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders.
He has also achieved great success in Europe, having won the ELF championship with Rhein Fire and been named Defensive MVP. The decision to join Vienna was an easy one, Franklin insists.
“Vienna has a championship culture and a fierce defense that matches my mentality.” he stated, before making his goal for the upcoming season just as clear: “Finish the job! I want to win a championship with the Vienna Vikings and become the first AFLE defensive MVP.”
