NFL VETERAN PUGH TO LEAD NEW ERA IN ITALY
Former New York Giants offensive lineman Justin Pugh has been appointed commissioner of the Italian Football League (IFL), marking a significant moment in the continued professionalisation of American football in Italy.
Pugh, the 19th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Syracuse, spent five seasons anchoring the Giants’ offensive line before joining the Arizona Cardinals. He returned to New York in 2023 for a final season, closing an 11-year NFL career defined by durability and leadership in the trenches. Now, his focus shifts from protecting quarterbacks to reshaping a league.
“I am incredibly proud and honoured to assume the role of commissioner/ ambassador of the Italian Football League,” Pugh said in a statement announcing his appointment. “American football has deep roots in Italy, and the passion this country has for the game is something truly special.”
Founded in 1980, the IFL has completed 44 seasons, producing 12 different Italian Bowl champions. Yet its latest chapter represents more than continuity. On February 25th, a notarial deed formally established Italian Football League Srl (IFL Srl), the limited liability company that will manage the operational and commercial aspects of the country’s top division under the Italian federation (FIDAF).
The restructuring follows a three-step process: the creation of the IFL Alliance by participating clubs; the formation of IFL Srl as the league’s operational and media engine; and the establishment of IFL Partners Srl, a vehicle designed to manage equity investment and strategic financial instruments.
The result is a shift from an association-based model to a corporate governance structure featuring a board of directors, defined executive roles and centralised commercial control — including sponsorship, licensing, merchandising, e-commerce and audiovisual rights.
Pugh, meanwhile, has made clear his remit extends well beyond symbolism.
“Stepping into this role, my focus goes beyond competition,” he explained. “We will work to modernise the league’s infrastructure, strengthen governance, elevate standards, and build a sustainable model capable of long term growth. But ambition alone is not enough. Structure must support it.”
His vision positions Italy as a culturally distinctive market within the global football landscape.
“When American football is developed with clarity, discipline and vision in this environment, it becomes more than a sport. It becomes a platform that blends athletic performance with cultural identity and international appeal.”
Recent Italian Bowls — staged in Toledo, Ohio — have already served as a transatlantic bridge, attracting American institutional and commercial interest. Meanwhile, the NFL’s expanding European footprint — spanning the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain — underscores the continent’s growing strategic importance.
“Our objective is to position the IFL as a structured, credible and forward looking institution, capable of connecting Italian football to the broader international ecosystem of the game,” Pugh added. “Italy has the talent, the market and the symbolic power to play a meaningful role in the global development of American football.
“This is not only a new chapter for me. It is an opportunity to elevate the game in Italy with seriousness, ambition and long term perspective. The work starts now.”
