OFFICIALS BOOST FOR EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ALLIANCE
The European Football Alliance has taken another major step towards the viability of becoming the continent’s premier professional football league in 2026 after securing the support of nearly every referee who officiated in last season’s European League of Football.
By standing with the EFA, around 100 of Europe’s most experienced officials are reinforcing the same values that unite the 11 teams that took the step to break away from the ELF, namely transparency, sustainability and the long-term growth of American football across Europe. Their involvement will now ensure the highest standards of professionalism and credibility on the field when the EFA competition begins next summer.
The referees emphasised that their decision reflected similar concerns over the financial and management practices employed by the ELF, and that they still had faith in the quality of the on-field product and maintained good operational co-operation with the commissioner and his team. By aligning with the EFA, however, they ensure that the most competitive games in Europe will be officiated to the highest standards under a league designed for stability and growth.
With 10 of the 11 member teams already committed, and available, to play under the EFA banner in 2026 — Raiders Tirol have cited complications, including an existing contract to play in the ELF next season, as the reason for their absence — the support of the officials pushed the new organisation another step down the road toward its goal, but other critical matters, including the likes of sponsorship and broadcast partners, remain as yet undefined.
