PANTHERS ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER AFTER AFLE DEBUT

Panthers Wrocław head coach Dave Likins has warned that his side still has ‘a lot to improve on’ despite opening the inaugural AFLE season with an emphatic 41-21 road victory over the London Warriors.

The Polish franchise overwhelmed London for long stretches at Cherry Red Records Stadium as quarterback Jameson Wang and receiver Mike Harley Jr immediately established themselves as one of the league’s most dangerous combinations. Harley produced the standout individual performance of the opening weekend, scoring four touchdowns in a dominant display against the Warriors secondary, while Wang threw four touchdown passes and added another rushing score himself.

But, afterward, Likins chose to focus less on the statistics and more on the physical mentality his team showed from the outset.

“I’m just really, really proud of our players,” the head coach said. “I’m proud of our staff and the work they’ve done all year. What I was most pleased with, and what I told the players after the game, was our tenacity at the start of the game, how hard we played, and how aggressively we played. And I’m really, really proud of that.”

From the opening possession, Wrocław looked sharper, faster and significantly more cohesive than a London side still adapting to life at continental level. Harley opened the scoring early before Wang repeatedly stretched the field vertically, exposing coverage breakdowns and taking advantage whenever the Warriors attempted to crowd the line of scrimmage. Harley’s chemistry with Wang appeared fully formed despite it being their first competitive outing together, with the former Miami Hurricanes receiver repeatedly creating separation downfield.

The Panthers also dominated defensively for long periods. Although London quarterback Karé Lyles and running back Andy Owusu produced occasional flashes, and tight end Eden Thiede-Palmer caught two touchdown passes for the Warriors, Wrocław consistently disrupted drives through pressure and forced errors, with Krzysztof Wiś producing one of the game’s defining defensive plays via a spectacular interception.

Likins nevertheless acknowledged there were still areas requiring immediate improvement, particularly on special teams after gifting London field position late on.

“We still have a lot to improve on in the special teams,” Likins admitted. “We had a bad snap at the end of the game that led to a touchdown.

“But practically all of our players played. We gave a lot of minutes to the substitutes at the end of the game, both offensively and defensively and I think that’s always good for our team.”

Linebacker Jorge Hernandez Jimenez echoed that sentiment despite the convincing scoreline.

“It was a tough game, really hot,” he said. “I think we did pretty well for a first game. I also think we fought well, but we made too many mistakes and allowed our opponents to gain too many yards, especially against our defense. We just have to prepare for next week and work on being better.”

Attention now quickly turns toward what could already become one of the defining games of AFLE’s inaugural season, as Wrocław prepare to host the Vienna Vikings — winners over the Berlin Thunder in the first game in AFLE league history — at Olympic Stadium this weekend.

“We have a huge challenge at home next week,” Likins confirmed, underlining his respect for Week 2’s opponent. “I hope we have a great turnout. People in Vienna say this is the best team, the best squad, ever assembled in Europe, so it’s going to be a big challenge for us, but I’m excited to see how our players rise to the challenge.”
