PANTHERS PREPARE FOR BERLIN AERIAL TEST
The race near the top of the American Football League Europe standings takes another intriguing turn on Sunday when Panthers Wrocław welcome Berlin Thunder to Tarczyński Arena in a meeting of two teams with identical 2-1 records.
While the Panthers continue to reinforce their status as title contenders, Dave Likins’ side know they face one of the most dangerous offenSes in the league, led by quarterback Jakeb Sullivan and wide receiver Jon Cole. Sullivan has emerged as one of the AFLE’s standout performers through the opening weeks of the season, leading the league in passing yards and touchdown throws, while Cole has developed into his favourite target in a combination capable of troubling any secondary. That challenge has not been lost on the Panthers head coach, who expects his defensive backs to face their toughest examination of the season.
“Berlin are a dangerous opponent, boasting the league’s best passing attack thanks to the duo of QB Jakeb Sullivan and WR Jon Cole,” Likins confirmed. “Our cornerbacks and safeties have a tough task ahead of them but, equally, we have to pressure the quarterback, guard their receivers, and break down the tight end.”
Likins is hopeful that running back Dawid Brzozowski will return to add another dimension to a Panthers offense that has shown flashes of explosiveness during the opening month of the campaign.
“We’ll play aggressive defense, eliminate mistakes, and fight for a 3-1 record,” the head coach promised. “But we need all our fans — both loyal and new — to come out, cheer loudly, and help us win.”
Sunday’s contest also renews a rivalry that stretches back several seasons and has frequently produced close encounters. Home field advantage has favoured the Panthers in those meetings, with the Wrocław club yet to suffer a defeat against Berlin on its own turf. Linebacker Patryk Guk expects another fiercely-contested affair and believes the support inside Tarczyński Arena could once again prove decisive.
“The Thunder are a solid team with European experience, and one of our old rivals,” Guk said. “They’ve always played close games against us, so they’ll be coming hungry for a win this time, too.
“So far, we haven’t lost a single home game against them, and we’ll try to keep it that way this Sunday. However, this will only be possible with the support of the fans.”
Kick-off is scheduled for 4:10pm, with the Panthers hoping to strengthen their championship credentials and improve to 3-1, while Berlin will attempt to spoil the occasion and claim a statement road victory.
