PANTHERS PREPARE FOR ‘BEST TEAM EVER IN EUROPE’

The early balance of power in the inaugural AFLE season could become significantly clearer on Sunday when Panthers Wrocław host Vienna Vikings in what already feels like one of the league’s defining fixtures of 2026.

Both organisations opened the new campaign with emphatic victories in Week 1, immediately reinforcing expectations that they will remain among the principal contenders for the AFLE title. Wrocław dismantled London Warriors 41-21 in the British capital behind quarterback Jameson Wang and four touchdown receptions from Mike Harley Jr, while Vienna overwhelmed Berlin Thunder 49-7 in the very first AFLE contest, following another polished display from one of Europe’s most established programmes. Sunday’s match-up at Stadion Olimpijski therefore arrives unusually early in the season, but with genuine heavyweight significance attached to it.

Panthers head coach Dave Likins admitted his side emerged from London encouraged but far from satisfied despite the convincing scoreline.

“We’re proud of our team but, even after the win in London, we have a lot of work to do this week,” Likins said. “And that’s as well as the enormous challenge of preparing for the match-up against Vienna.

“The Vikings are a great organisation — and they’ve built the best line-up I’ve ever seen in Europe. They’re incredibly talented and have tremendous depth in both attack and defense. I have tremendous respect and admiration for Chris Calaycay, Jordan Neuman and the rest of their coaching staff, and it will be an incredibly tough — and entertaining — match for our fans at the Olympic Stadium.”

Likins’ comments underline the wider perception surrounding Vienna entering the AFLE era. While the new competition has created fresh uncertainty across the European landscape, the Vikings remain one of the continent’s benchmark organisations after years of sustained success and deep roster continuity.

Wrocław, however, believe they possess a roster capable of matching those standards — and know that they will need to. Wide receiver Maciej Krupa described Sunday’s clash as the Panthers’ ‘biggest test’ so far, but also insisted the club’s championship ambitions require victories against opponents of Vienna’s calibre.

“From an opponent of the calibre of the Vienna Vikings, you can expect very good football and few mistakes,” Krupa explained. “They have a great roster on paper, and they showed it in Week 1 against the Berlin Thunder. If we want to win the championship, we have to beat everyone. This match will be our biggest test, because the Vikings are an absolutely top team, but it promises to be a great match.”
