The ‘other’ new European pro league got underway with comfortable wins for two ELF ‘old boys’ as the Vienna Vikings and Panthers Wrocław showed their assembled power.

Berlin Thunder 7 @ 49 Vienna Vikings

The American Football League Europe era officially began in Vienna on Saturday evening as the Vienna Vikings crushed Berlin Thunder 49-7 in front of more than 4,000 fans — and guest of honour Marshawn Lynch — at Wiener Sport-Club-Stadion to claim the first victory in league history.

Quarterback Ben Holmes immediately looked every inch the centrepiece of the Vikings’ title ambitions, directing a ruthless offense that punished nearly every Berlin mistake. The opening score in AFLE history arrived after Berlin gambled aggressively on fourth down deep in Vienna territory, only for the Vikings defense to produce an early stop that flipped momentum instantly. Holmes promptly threw the first touchdown pass in AFLE history when he found former XFL and CFL receiver Darrell Stewart Jr in the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard score — with Stewart’s contested catch immediately became one of the defining images of the league’s opening night.

From there, Vienna overwhelmed the Thunder on both sides of the ball. Holmes repeatedly stretched Berlin vertically while the Vikings’ ground game steadily wore down the German side’s defensive front. Finnish running back Karri Pajarinen rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown, while German back Albert Wiesigstrauch was even more productive with 136 rushing yards and a score as Vienna piled up 190 yards on the ground behind a dominant offensive line. There was also a notable cameo late on from back-up quarterback Nico Hrouda, who replaced Holmes and immediately launched a 58-yard touchdown pass to Noah Toure…

Berlin briefly stayed competitive during the first quarter, but Vienna exploded clear with 21 unanswered second-quarter points before adding further scores after half-time to turn the inaugural AFLE contest into a statement performance.

Alejandro ‘Iceman’ Fernandez was arguably the most disruptive player on the field defensively. The Spanish pass rusher finished with three sacks and repeatedly collapsed the pocket around Berlin quarterback Jakeb Sullivan, with Football Austria describing him as having ‘terrorised’ the Thunder offense throughout the afternoon. One sequence just before half-time effectively ended the game as any sort of contest. Sullivan attempted a quick throw under pressure, only for the ball to ricochet off his own lineman’s helmet and into the hands of Vienna defensive back Pablo Araya for an interception. Holmes then immediately converted the turnover into another rushing touchdown moments before the break to make it 28-0.

For Berlin, wide receiver Jon Cole provided one of the few genuine bright spots. The former ELF playmaker caught eight passes for 136 yards and scored the Thunder’s only touchdown on a 41-yard strike from Sullivan in the fourth quarter. Sullivan eventually threw for 255 yards, but much of Berlin’s production came after Vienna had already established complete control.

Panthers Wrocław 41 @ 21 London Warriors

If Vienna provided the opening night statement, Wrocław delivered the weekend’s most explosive individual performances 24 hours later with a 41-21 road victory over the London Warriors at Cherry Red Records Stadium in Wimbledon.

Quarterback Jameson Wang produced a flawless debut for the Polish side, posting a perfect passer rating while repeatedly dissecting London’s secondary. Wang’s chemistry with former Miami Hurricanes (and Stuttgart Surge) receiver Mike Harley Jr quickly became the defining storyline of the game as the duo connected for four touchdown passes.

The Panthers seized control almost immediately. After forcing a three-and-out on London’s opening possession, Wang engineered a touchdown drive on the very next series before later finding Harley deep down the sideline for another score that stretched the lead. London struggled to contain Wrocław’s tempo throughout the afternoon, particularly once the Panthers began attacking vertically outside the numbers.

Harley repeatedly created separation against the Warriors secondary and already looks capable of becoming one of AFLE’s premier playmakers. Wang, meanwhile, consistently extended plays under pressure and punished London whenever the British side attempted to commit extra defenders toward the line of scrimmage.

To their credit, the Warriors showed flashes offensively despite entering the season as one of the league’s newest and least experienced franchises. Former Britball MVP Andy Owusu and homegrown running back Raymond Sobowale both produced positive moments with the ball in hand, while London also unveiled seven-time Britbowl champion Dee Williams as backup quarterback behind starter Karé Lyles. However, defensive breakdowns and missed tackles ultimately proved too costly against a Panthers offense that looked significantly more polished and physically prepared.

London’s scoring came almost entirely through the air once the Warriors abandoned the run game in pursuit of their opponent. Lyles threw all three touchdowns for the British side and actually finished with respectable numbers given he was under constant pressure, passing for 211 yards and three scores.

Tight end Eden Thiede-Palmer was comfortably London’s standout offensive player. The former British prospect caught six passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns, including an important second-quarter score that briefly cut the deficit to 13-7 and gave the Warriors some momentum. Later in the fourth quarter, Lyles again found Thiede-Palmer in the end zone after the drive had nearly collapsed following a sack and a fumble scare. London’s final touchdown arrived late after a special teams error from Wroclaw. A bad Panthers snap on a punt gave the Warriors possession deep in Polish territory, allowing Lyles to connect with Henry Rowland for a late consolation touchdown that reduced the final margin to 41-21.

Wroclaw finish Week 1 atop the early standings alongside Vienna, but something will have to give as the preseason favourites clash in Week 2’s highlight game. London, meanwhile, immediately face another daunting assignment against Rhein Fire in Week 2, while the remaining four teams get in on the action, with Alpine Rams hosting Berlin and Paris Lights doing likewise with Italy’s Firenze Red Lions.
