THIS GIVEN SUNDAY – UFL WK6: DEFENDERS TIGHTEN GRIP
Week 6 of the United Football League season may not have produced the same level of chaos as previous rounds, but reinforced several of Week 5’s narratives as the DC Defenders strengthened their grip at the top, and both Dallas and Orlando continued to wobble.

St. Louis Battlehawks 16 @ 3 Louisville Kings
Four days after putting 47 on Dallas, Louisville were dragged into a completely different type of game as St. Louis leaned on control and field position, with Harrison Frost (22-of-40, 242 yards, 2 TDs) growing into the contest after a disjointed opening.
The breakthrough came late in the first half when Frost found Gary Jennings Jr for a four-yard score to edge St. Louis ahead 9–3, before the Battlehawks then took over completely after the break. Frost connected with Steven McBride for an 11-yard touchdown in the third quarter, while Louisville’s offense stalled with no second-half points before a late Chandler Rogers interception sealed the Kings’ fate.
In truth, the Battlehawks’ defense dominated the first Derby Classic, finishing with six sacks, nine tackles for loss and just 166 yards allowed, holding the Kings to 2-of-14 on third down after an opening-drive field goal from Tanner Brown.
After a slow start, Frost settled in, first setting up Ramiz Ahmed for a 42-yard field goal before a 33-yard strike to Blake Jackson sparked the touch-pass score for Jennings Jr. Late in the third.
Louisville never recovered as Pita Taumoepenu led the early pressure, and the late interception by Nevelle Clark underlined a complete defensive shutdown.

Houston Gamblers 17 @ 24 Columbus Aviators
Columbus flipped the Week 5 script as they hosted Houston just a week after succumbing 17-13 in Texas — and did so emphatically. Jalen McClendon was in full command (20-of-26, 187 yards), spreading the ball around efficiently — including six catches for 103 yards from Tay Martin — as the Aviators posted a season-high 367 yards of offense.
The ground game finished the job, with both John Lovett and ZaQuandre White punching in scores, while the defense limited Houston to just 185 total yards. For the Gamblers, it was another case of offensive stagnation, with limited possession value, minimal downfield threat and no sustained response once Columbus established control.
Lovett’s score came at the end of a 14-play, 74-yard opening drive, with the running back bowling in from three yards, and the Aviators never relinquished control of the first half. McClendon was sharp throughout, hitting Antwane Wells for a nine-yard score before a 52-yard strike to Martin set up White to extend the lead to 21–10.
Houston stayed within reach, as Taulia Tagovailoa found Lawrence Keys for a 21-yard touchdown, but injuries at quarterback and a late interception by Kedrick Whitehead Jr. ended any comeback bid. Columbus finished with 179 rushing yards, Lovett leading with 63.

Dallas Renegades 6 @ 24 DC Defenders
If Week 5 exposed Dallas, Week 6 confirmed the flaws that look likely to prevent them making a title run. DC overwhelmed the Renegades with a decisive 17-point second quarter and never let the game escape a vice-like grip.
The Defenders were both efficient and controlled, allowing their defense to dictate the game flow, while the offense capitalised on short fields to build a three-score cushion. Dallas, by contrast, never established rhythm, managing just six points across four quarters.
DC’s fifth straight win followed a now-familiar script, the defending champions striking early before removing any question of a comeback by their opposition. Jordan Ta’amu threw three first-half touchdowns, starting with a high-point finish to Erik Ezukanma after a 52-yard catch-and-run from Briley Moore. Further scores followed through Mason Fairchild and a one-handed grab from Cornell Powell, while Matt McCrane added a 56-yard field goal for a 24–0 half-time lead.
Dallas threatened briefly after Austin Reed connected with Tyler Vaughns, but turnovers, missed field goals and failed red-zone trips ensured there was no way back as DC’s defense, led by Micah Baskerville, controlled the game throughout.

Birmingham Stallions 20 @ 17 Orlando Storm
The weekend’s most consequential result came in Orlando, where Birmingham edged a one-score game that turned on execution in key moments.
Orlando had opportunities to take control in the second half, including a goal-to-go sequence, but turnovers proved decisive as Birmingham, finding themselves in something of a slump through five weeks of competition, converted one of those mistakes into a go-ahead field goal for a 20–14 lead, then held on as the Storm trimmed the gap to three.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, facing his former team, made sure the turnovers counted as he threw for 271 yards and led Birmingham to a statement win that snapped a four-game skid. Orlando twice reached scoring position early, but fumbles from Jack Plummer handed momentum to Birmingham, and DTR capitalised immediately, linking with Jaydon Mickens before Snoop Conner opened the scoring, then finding Justyn Ross for an 11-yard touchdown.
Ross dominated (7 receptions, 135 yards), while Anders Carlson added field goals from 39 and 48 yards. Orlando responded through Chris Rowland and K.J. Hamler, but further turnovers, including another botched snap, proved decisive, as a late 32-yard strike from Thompson-Robinson to Ross set up the game-clinching conversion.
Trailing 20–17 inside the final minutes, Orlando opted to punt rather than chase possession, and that allowed Birmingham to close things out on the ground and seal a win that keeps them in the playoff hunt.
