The reigning champion DC Defenders are suddenly staring at the possibility of missing the postseason entirely after slipping to a third straight defeat in Week 9 of the United Football League, with Jordan Ta’amu’s season-ending injury continuing to reshape the playoff picture.

DC Defenders 19 @ 27 Orlando Storm
DC fell 27-19 to the pace-setting Orlando Storm on Friday night, leaving Shannon Harris’ side at 5-4 and vulnerable entering a decisive rematch next week. Orlando, meanwhile, improved to 7-2 and strengthened its case as the league’s most dangerous team heading into the postseason.
Quarterback Jack Plummer continued his breakout campaign with one of his sharpest performances of the year, completing 21 of 27 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns. Former DC receiver Chris Rowland tormented his old side with eight receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown as Orlando built a commanding 21-10 half-time lead.
Without injured starting quarterback Jordan Ta’amu — as they will for the remainder of the season — DC struggled to generate rhythm offensively. Spencer Sanders completed just 10 of 21 passes for 160 yards, though he did add 75 rushing yards in an effort to keep the Defenders alive. Deon Jackson provided a spark on the ground with 64 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, but Orlando’s defense repeatedly disrupted drives at key moments.
The Storm’s rise has been one of the defining stories of the season, as Anthony Becht guides the expansion/relocation franchise to a playoff berth at the first attempt. After a brief dip, Orlando has now won three straight games, while Plummer’s recent form has pushed him firmly into MVP discussion.

Birmingham Stallions 29 @ 36 Columbus Aviators
Saturday delivered perhaps the wildest finish of the weekend as the Columbus Aviators stunned the Birmingham Stallions 36-29 with a furious late comeback that left Birmingham’s playoff hopes also hanging by a thread.
Quarterback Jalen Morton produced the signature performance of his UFL career, throwing for 213 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Keke Chism chipped in with three catches for 51 yards as Columbus, who are already eliminated from postseason contention, erased a late deficit in dramatic fashion.
The Stallions appeared to be in control for long stretches despite another uneven offensive showing from Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who completed 16 of 35 passes for 157 yards. Snoop Conner added 53 rushing yards, but Birmingham could not close the game out defensively.
After the defeat, Birmingham coach A.J. McCarron did not hide his frustration, calling the loss ‘a heartbreaker’.

Dallas Renegades 23 @ 37 Louisville Kings
Louisville’s playoff push gathered further momentum with a 37-23 victory over the Dallas Renegades, as Chandler Rogers again spearheaded one of the UFL’s hottest offenses. The Kings quarterback threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground as Louisville improved to 5-4 after starting the season 0-3.
Dallas opened strongly through Austin Reed and Tyler Vaughns, whose 36-yard touchdown gave the Renegades an early lead, but Louisville gradually took control behind Rogers’ efficiency and a dominant rushing attack. Ian Wheeler rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown, James Robinson added 88 yards, and the Kings finished with 205 rushing yards overall. Tanner Brown also continued his record-breaking season, drilling field goals from 45 and 54 yards to set a new UFL single-season mark with 23 successful FGs.
The decisive stretch came in the fourth quarter. After Reed connected with Curtis Hodges for a touchdown to briefly pull Dallas closer, Rogers immediately answered with a 40-yard scoring strike to Isaiah Winstead before later finding Tarik Black for a 22-yard touchdown that sealed Louisville’s third straight win and a potential, if once unlikely, route into the playoffs.

St Louis Battlehawks 21 @ 15 Houston Gamblers
Week 9 concluded with the St. Louis Battlehawks clinching a playoff berth thanks to a gritty 21-15 road victory over the Houston Gamblers.
Houston initially threatened another upset after building a 9-0 lead behind Hunter Dekkers and Jontre Kirklin, while Marcus Yarns provided an early explosive rushing play that helped set the tone. But St. Louis responded behind veteran quarterback Luis Perez and a defense that tightened late to shut down Houston’s final drive.
The Battlehawks eventually seized control with a methodical fourth-quarter drive before Ryan Ahmed drilled a key 34-yard field goal to stretch the lead to six points inside the final three minutes. Houston still had one final possession to force a dramatic finish, but St. Louis’ defensive front slammed the door to secure the postseason berth.

With just one round of games remaining in the regular season, Orlando continues to set the pace and has already secured its playoff place at 7-2. St. Louis now joins the Storm in the postseason field at 6-3, while DC and Louisville both sit at 5-4. Birmingham has fallen to 4-5 and are currently the contender on the outside looking in, with Dallas, Houston and Columbus already eliminated.
DC’s task, on paper, looks the most formidable, with Orlando heading for Audi Field amid the possibility of the reigning champions missing out on the chance to defend their title on home turf next month. Elsewhere, the Kings have to avoid an upset at the mercurial Aviators as Birmingham hosts Houston needing nothing less than a convincing victory. The remaining game opens the weekend, with Dallas travelling to St Louis in search of something to half their alarming slide.
