TOONGA INJURY BLOW FOR ELF’S STORM

Glen Toonga’s return as reigning MVP of the European League of Football has sadly proven short-lived, after the Nordic Storm running back managed just half a game before having to be shut down with injury.

The Briton was enjoying an historic debut with the league’s newest team, having accounted for more than 100 yards and the Storm’s first-ever touchdown in less than two quarters of play against the Helvetic Mercenaries in Switzerland at the weekend, but left the game with an injury shortly before half-time and did not return. After further examinations, the Storm has confirmed that its star turn will also miss the remainder of the season with what proved to be an Achilles tendon rupture.

“Losing Glen for the season is not just sad for the Nordic Storm, it’s sad for the entire league,” team owner and interim GM Michael Planeta lamented. “Glen is a great football player and everyone in the league respects him — and, in part, fears him — for what he brings on game day. For us, as a team, the loss is not just on the field, it is also in the locker room because, as fierce a player as he is on the field, he is an even more fierce team-mate. Losing the 2024 league MVP would — no matter how you look at it — be a big blow to any team.”

Toonga’s first half performance in Switzerland was good enough to leave him second in the overall rushing stats after the opening weekend of the season, underlining just how much of a weapon he was to be for the Storm.

“Overcoming loss is a part of football, whether it be an injury or a game,” Planeta continued. “We rarely go through life or football without experiencing loss, and how you adapt, bend, overcome and rise up is what defines character. I have no doubt that all of Glen’s team-mates and coaches will give their absolute best to come together and do everything in their power to make him proud — and, if possible, bring him a trophy. Glen won’t be the league MVP this year, but we as a team can be his MVP for 2025 by showing him what we can and will do to make him proud.”

Nordic Storm has said there will be no further comment at this time, but Toonga, via his Instagram, remained positive.

“The story is little different this time,” he posted. “Still another chance to go 1-0. Reach highs, never reach limits. #roadtorecovery #strongerthanbefore”
