The Vienna Vikings head to Poland this weekend for one of the standout games of the new AFLE season, a Week 2 encounter that could have implications come seasons end.

Chris Calaycay’s side takes on the Wrocław Panthers after both former European League of Football franchises renew their rivalry after coming out on top in their respective Week 1 encounters, as Vienna dismantled the Berlin Thunder 49-7 in front of 3,821 fans at Wiener Sport-Club Stadium, and the Panthers travelled to London and defeated the newly-formed Warriors 41-21. With both organisations carrying legitimate title ambitions into the inaugural AFLE campaign, Sunday’s clash already feels significant despite arriving only in Week 2.

The Vikings hold a commanding 7-1 advantage in the all-time series, with Wrocław’s only victory coming in 2022 when Vienna had already secured a playoff berth and rested starters for the final game of the ELF regular season. Despite that, however, Calaycay is not taking anything for granted following a strong offseason of recruitment by the Panthers.

“Games against Wrocław have always been intense and physical in recent years,” the Vikings head coach claimed. “Both teams know each other very well, even though there have been some personnel changes. We need to be focused and want to take the next step this season.”

The Vikings arrive in Poland after producing one of the most complete performances of the opening AFLE weekend. Against the rebuilding Thunder, quarterback Ben Holmes threw for 156 yards and a touchdown, while also adding two rushing scores, and running backs Karri Pajarinen and Albert Wiesigstrauch powered a dominant ground attack behind an impressive offensive line, with Pajarinen rushing for 103 yards and a touchdown and Wiesigstrauch adding 136 yards and another score.

The opening score carried added historical significance, as former Panthers receiver Darrell Stewart Jr caught the touchdown pass from Holmes to record the first touchdown in AFLE history — and now faces his former team for the first time since moving to Vienna to add another intriguing subplot to a rivalry that has become one of the most consistent fixtures in European football.

While the offense grabbed headlines against Berlin, Vienna’s defense was equally impressive. Alejandro Fernandez delivered a standout performance with five tackles, three sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble, earning TISSOT Player of the Week honours, while defensive back Pablo Araya also contributed an interception as the Vikings largely shut down Berlin’s offense.

Sunday’s contest will also mark another milestone for the Vikings. The game against the Panthers will be the first competitive appearance for Vienna’s newly-unveiled white away uniform, which was officially presented this week following a launch campaign featuring wide receiver Philipp Haun and defensive back Amani Dennis at Vienna’s Heidi Horten Collection.
