WROCLAW ADDING TALENT RIGHT TO AFLE KICKOFF

Panthers Wrocław have continued to reinforce their roster ahead of the inaugural AFLE campaign with the signing of experienced linebacker Simón Alvarez Plata, a player whose path through Germany, Spain and the European League of Football has already exposed him to some of the continent’s highest levels of competition.

The 2023 German champion joins Wrocław after a brief spell with the Terrassa Reds in Spain, where he helped the club reach the national semi-finals before turning his attention toward AFLE’s opening season. The Panthers begin that campaign on May 24th with a road trip to face the London Warriors in the second of two match-ups of the league’s opening weekend.

Alvarez Plata first entered organised football in Berlin in 2014, developing through the youth systems of the Berlin Cobras and Berlin Rebels before reaching the senior level in 2021. His stock rose rapidly during a successful stint with the Potsdam Royals, culminating in a German championship in 2023, before subsequent moves to the Hamburg Sea Devils and Berlin Thunder exposed him to the increasingly volatile world of pan-European football competition.

That experience, he believes, can immediately benefit a Panthers defense attempting to establish itself as one of AFLE’s early benchmark units.

“Yes, I believe it will help,” Alvarez Plata said when asked whether his international background would prove important in Wrocław. “Playing at the international level requires enormous commitment and excellent preparation — two things the Panthers can expect from me, 100 percent.”

The move also reunites him indirectly with familiar connections from Germany. Alvarez Plata revealed that former Panthers player Gennadyi Adams played a meaningful role in his decision to head to Poland after the pair spent time together in both Potsdam and Berlin.

“Definitely,” he said. “’Genna’ and I played together in Potsdam and last year in Berlin. He’s my buddy. I really appreciated his help and all the information he shared about Wrocław; it ultimately helped me make my decision.”

The Panthers have spent much of the offseason positioning themselves as one of AFLE’s most stable and ambitious operations, particularly after years of experience navigating the ELF environment. Alvarez Plata said that reputation mattered.

“Firstly, I’m always looking for the best possible environment that will allow me to develop as a player and grow as a person,” he explained. “Secondly, the Panthers have a great reputation. For me, it was the perfect opportunity to continue my career and take the next step.”

That desire for structure and collective purpose also shaped his view of what the Panthers must establish internally if they are to challenge immediately in a new league environment.

“I believe that the good of the team must come before the good of the individual, and the key mentality should be the desire to improve and progress every day,” he said, reflecting on the championship culture he experienced in Potsdam.

His recent stint in Spain provided another layer of preparation before returning to the centre of the European game. AFLE clubs have increasingly targeted players arriving with active spring football experience rather than those coming directly out of long offseasons, and Alvarez Plata believes his time with Terrassa leaves him physically ready for the demands ahead.

“I spent a great time with my brothers, I loved it, and I will miss it,” he said. “It was great fun but, looking back, it was also a great offseason and preparation for me to be fully ready for the upcoming season.”

On the field, Alvarez Plata expects to bring versatility to the second level of the Panthers’ defense, describing himself as equally comfortable attacking downhill against the run or dropping into coverage.

“I consider myself a hybrid linebacker,” he said. “I’m comfortable both in run defense and pass coverage. In both of these areas, fans can be sure of one thing: I’ll play aggressively, from sideline to sideline.”

That aggression may be needed quickly. The Panthers enter AFLE as one of the league’s most recognisable brands, but also one carrying expectations after years of competing against many of Europe’s strongest organisations. Wrocław’s opener against the Warriors is expected to offer one of the clearest early indicators of the competitive standard AFLE can establish in its inaugural season.

For Alvarez Plata, however, the objectives remain relatively simple.

“My goal is to help the team win and maintain consistent performance week after week,” he said. “Success for me will be being reliable in my role and giving my all wherever I’m needed.”
