Neil Dutton’s 2024 Mock Draft

Gridiron

Neil Dutton’s 2024 Mock Draft

Gridiron NFL

Neil Dutton: “Based on team needs, here is my First Round no trades mock draft. Obviously, it gets blown out of the water as soon as the Vikings find their dance partner but, for now, this is a good team-to-fit selection for my limited money!”

PICK #1
CHICAGO BEARS
The Bears have done an admirable job setting the table for the quarterback they will select with the first overall pick. They signed running back D’Andre Swift and tight end Gerald Everett while also trading for veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen. Trading away Justin Fields shows that they are committed to trying yet again to land their franchise signal caller with the first of their two top ten selections, while the additions they have made should not stop them selecting a top tier wide receiver should one fall to them at nine.
Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 1 (from CAR)
Round 1, Pick 9
Round 3, Pick 75
Round 4, Pick 122 (from PHI)
Biggest Needs
QB, WR, CB
DUT’s MOCK DRAFT 1st Round Selection
CALEB WILLIAMS, QB, USC

PICK #2
WASHINGTON COMMANDERS
The Commanders added a lot of cheap veteran players to their roster during free agency. Marcus Mariota would seem to the quarterback if they had to play a game today, Austin Ekeler signed after spending his entire career to date as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, Zach Ertz returns to the NFC East after spending his most productive years as a Philadelphia Eagle, while Bobby Wagner reunites with his old Seahawks coach Dan Quinn. The team can still anoint a new franchise quarterback with the second overall pick, but is screaming out for help across both lines.

Round 3, Pick 78 (from SEA)

Round 5, Pick 152 (from SEA)
Round 7, Pick 222
Biggest Needs
QB, OL, DL
DUT’s MOCK DRAFT 1st Round Selection
JAYDEN DANIELS, QB, LSU

PICK #3
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
The Patriots are one of the most talent poor teams in the entire NFL, and seem to have needs everywhere. They added some veterans in free agency, but no one expects Jacoby Brissett to be the long-term answer at quarterback, nor do they think Antonio Gibson is the key to jump starting the Patriots offense. New head coach Jerod Mayo desperately needs to find the next franchise quarterback, but also needs to put an offensive line in front of that player and give him players to catch his passes. A trade down from the third overall pick to load up with more picks would not be a stunner.

Biggest Needs
QB, WR, OL
DUT’s MOCK DRAFT 1st Round Selection
DRAKE MAYE, QB, North Carolina

PICK #4
ARIZONA CARDINALS
The Cardinals added several pieces to their defense in free agency, a unit that is sorely in need of reinforcing after a woeful first season under Jonathan Gannon. They also added Jonah Williams at offensive tackle, and it is the offensive side of the ball that could really stand the most investment during the draft. The team is woefully short of pass catching weapons, especially after Marquise Brown signed for the Chiefs in free agency and Rondale Moore was traded to the Falcons. Gannon and GM Monti Ossenfort are hardly lacking in picks, however.

MARVIN HARRISON, WR, Ohio State

PICK #5
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
Everything the Chargers have done this offseason suggests they want to become a physical, hard-nosed team on offense: from the hire of Jim Harbaugh to the signings of Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins, and the trade or release of the team’s best wide receivers. As such, their focus should be on beefing up. The offensive line has long been an issue and one that should be addressed early and often in the draft, while they simply need to add some bodies at the wide receiver and tight end spots.
Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 5
Round 2, Pick 37
Round 3, Pick 69
Round 4, Pick 105
Round 4, Pick 110 (from CHI)

Round 7, Pick 253
Biggest Needs
OL, WR, Edge
DUT’s MOCK DRAFT 1st Round Selection
JOE ALT, OT, Notre Dame

PICK #6
NEW YORK GIANTS
Financially, the Giants are committed to Daniel Jones at quarterback in 2024. Logically, they should not let money stop them from landing his replacement if the right guy falls to them in the draft. The offensive line continues to be a major area of concern whoever lines up under center, and the pass-catching corps is one of the weakest in the entire league. The Giants traded for Brian Burns, giving them a talented duo of pass rushers with Burns across from Kayvon Thibodeaux, but this team needs an almost complete offensive overhaul.
Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 6
Round 2, Pick 47 (from SEA)
Round 3, Pick 70
Round 4, Pick 107
Round 5, Pick 166
Round 6, Pick 183
Biggest Needs
QB, OL, WR
DUT’s MOCK DRAFT 1st Round Selection
MALIK NABERS, WR, LSU

PICK #7
TENNESSEE TITANS
The Titans were very active in free agency, almost surprisingly so. They snatched Calvin Ridley from division rival Jacksonville, signed Tony Pollard to share the backfield with Tyjae Spears now Derrick Henry is in Baltimore, while adding Chidobe Awuzie and trading for La’Jarius Sneed to bolster their secondary. These moves seem to indicate that adding offensive line talent will be a priority during the draft, with maybe an eye or two directed towards beefing up the pass rush.
Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 7
Round 2, Pick 38
Round 4, Pick 106
Round 5, Pick 146 (from MIN)
Round 6, Pick 182

Round 7, Pick 252 (from KC)
Biggest Needs
OL, DL, WR
DUT’s MOCK DRAFT 1st Round Selection
TROY FAUTANU, OT, Washington

PICK #8
ATLANTA FALCONS
Improving the offense was clearly a focus for the Falcons in free agency, and they did just that by landing quarterback Kirk Cousins and wide receiver Darnell Mooney, while also swinging a trade for Rondale Moore. Investing in the defensive side of the ball in the draft makes a whole lot of sense, with the team in need of a talent injection at pass rusher and at cornerback across from A.J. Terrell.

Round 3, Pick 74
Round 3, Pick 79 (from JAX)

PICK #9
CHICAGO BEARS
Despite landing Everett and Allen as veteran pass catchers alongside D.J. Moore in the run-up to the draft, the additions should not stop Ryan Poles and Co from selecting a top-tier wide receiver should one fall to them at nine.
Draft Picks

PICK #10
NEW YORK JETS
The Jets made some moves to improve the situation around the returning Aaron Rodgers, signing Tyron Smith to play left tackle while trading for Morgan Moses to fill the spot opposite him. These moves, plus the signing of wide receiver Mike Williams, gives the Jets flexibility to take the best available player in the early stages of the draft. A longer-term answer at offensive tackle might be a solid post-Rodgers move, while boosting the defensive backfield would make an already strong unit stronger.

PICK #11
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Quarterback went from a position of interest to one of urgent priority for Minnesota after Kirk Cousins left in free agency. The Vikings look an absolute certainty to move up to land a signal caller in the draft. The team added some interesting defensive players in free agency, but looking to bolster their cornerback room and beginning to think about life after Harrison Smith at safety would make a lot of sense.

J.J. McCARTHY, QB, Michigan

PICK #12
DENVER BRONCOS
The Broncos are, and have been since Peyton Manning retired, in desperate need of a long-term answer to their quarterback troubles. They pulled the plug on the Russell Wilson experiment after just two seasons, leaving them once again looking for a new face of the franchise. Jerry Jeudy was sent to the Browns for a couple of draft picks, leaving whoever the quarterback will be in 2024 a trifle short of viable receiving options. The Broncos defense improved as the 2023 season went on but could still stand an injection of youth on the edge and in the secondary, especially after releasing safety Justin Simmons.

BO NIX, QB, Oregon

PICK #13
LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
The Raiders were active in free agency, and their roster certainly appears to be better today than it was in Week 18 of the 2023 season. But they still have serious needs, especially at the quarterback spot, with Gardner Minshew currently looking like being the starter. Assuming that the team is looking to add a quarterback, they could also look at investing across the offensive line to protect him, while adding a few pass catchers would certainly help whoever is under center in 2024. Christian Wilkins fills a huge hole at defensive tackle, but the defensive backfield could stand a talent injection.

PICK #14
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
The Saints seem committed to Derek Carr at quarterback, so they need to do a lot to surround him with suitable talent, both from a protection and a production standpoint. Chris Olave can’t do everything by himself at wide receiver, while investing in the offensive line is never a terrible idea. Looking to add talent to the pass rush would also be a solid tactic, especially in the quarterback led NFC South.

PICK #15
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
The Colts focused on retaining their own players in free agency, with contract extensions for the likes of Michael Pittman, Kenny Moore and Grover Stewart taking priority over signing new players. They have a few nice pieces on offense to put around returning quarterback Anthony Richardson, so it would be logical to assume that they will focus on adding defensive talent in the draft. The Colts look desperately short-handed at cornerback after failing to land La’Jarius Sneed, while reinforcements for the pass rush would be welcomed by Gus Bradley and his defensive staff.

PICK #16
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
Noah Fant was re-signed by the Seahawks which, in concert with the departure of Colby Parkinson and Will Dissly, may mean an extended role in the offense moving forward. The Seahawks looked like they had struck gold by drafting two starting offensive linemen in 2022, only to see injury wipe out the position almost entirely in 2023. They simply must invest in the front five to protect Geno Smith, who the team re-committed to during the offseason. Linebacker is also an area in need of reinforcements, especially with franchise icon Bobby Wagner now in Washington.

PICK #17
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
It is a big draft for the Jaguars, after the team faded spectacularly in 2023 and missed the playoffs. They failed to re-sign wide receiver Calvin Ridley, but did add a wide out in Gabe Davis, although this should not be enough to stop them adding further talent at the receiver position. They could look to improve the offensive line in front of Trevor Lawrence heading into what some may see as a make-or-break season for the team, while beefing up the defensive front wouldn’t be a bad idea considering how much their division foes love to run the ball.

PICK #18
CINCINNATI BENGALS
The Bengals added some solid veteran pieces to the roster in free agency, without going crackers in any one area. Zack Moss should be able to fill the Joe Mixon-sized void in the running game, while Mike Gesicki is the latest in a long line of veteran fliers the team has taken at the tight end spot. Geno Stone was added to the defensive backfield after a career season for the Ravens in 2023, but the Bengals could do with devoting some resources to the defensive line and, with their franchise quarterback in place, could also look to investing in players tasked to keep him upright.

LOS ANGELES RAMS
When one of the greatest players in NFL history retires, it stands to reason that a team might need to reinforce his position. The Rams said goodbye to Aaron Donald in the offseason, and should now look to bolster the defensive line in addition to adding some pieces to their pass rushing arsenal. The Rams could look to add something to their defensive backfield too, even after acquiring cornerback Darious Williams and safety Kamren Curl in free agency.

The Steelers remade their quarterback room after free agency, adding Russell Wilson and trading for Justin Fields. They also added Patrick Queen to bolster their linebacking corps, while gaining cornerback Donte Jackson in exchange for wide receiver Diontae Johnson. The offensive line continues to be an area of concern for the team, however, while adding reinforcements to the receiving corps would be an idea after losing Johnson.

MIAMI DOLPHINS
The Dolphins cap situation meant they were not the most active team in free agency, with most of their gaps needing to be filled through the draft. The offensive line continues to be an area that the team could do better staffing, while their defensive line looks to be lacking a bit of bite now that Christian Wilkins is wearing Raiders silver-and-black. The defensive backfield could use some reinforcements, especially after Xavien Howard was released, and another pass catcher behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle would not hurt either.

PICK #22
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
The Eagles were active in free agency, adding running back Saquon Barkley, linebacker Devin White and pass rusher Bryce Huff, while also reuniting with safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. They still have holes all over their defense, however, especially at linebacker and safety, while cornerback depth is a serious issue. A third option at wide receiver is also called for, while it would fit the team’s MO to consider spending an early pick on an offensive tackle and/or a tight end.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS
With a new QB likely to be their first pick, the Vikings could look to bolster their defense, with longer-term backfield depth a concern. Trading out or going best player available may also be viable options although, having done a deal to acquire this pick from Houston, the former is especially unlikely (as, realistically, is still being in this slot on opening night if there is a scramble for QBs).

DALLAS COWBOYS
The Cowboys brought in very few players in free agency, and instead said goodbye to several important pieces of their 2023 roster. Left tackle Tyron Smith is now with the Jets and center Tyler Biadasz signed for the Commanders, so looking to boost the offensive line would seem to be a priority. The Cowboys could also stand another receiving threat across from CeeDee Lamb, while the running back cupboard is looking rather bare after Tony Pollard decamped for Tennessee, despite the late FA addition of Royce Freeman.

PICK #25
GREEN BAY PACKERS
The Packers added running back Josh Jacobs in free agency, pegging him to replace the released Aaron Jones, while also making a splash by signing safety Xavier McKinney. With perhaps the youngest mix of pass catchers in the entire NFL, the way forward should be ensuring Jordan Love is kept upright to get the ball into their hands. A focus on bolstering the offensive line would not be a shock, while further moves to reinforce the defensive backfield should be expected.

BUFFALO BILLS
The Bills were not overly active in free agency after cutting a lot of veterans just to ensure they were cap compliant. Then came the trade of Stefon Diggs to Houston… Buffalo did make a few interesting signings, though, notably adding Curtis Samuel to the pass-catching corps, but this is a team that suddenly has a lot of needs, and signing Samuel should not stop them looking at wide receivers early and often in the draft. DETROIT LIONS
The Lions owed much of their 2023 success to their offense, so it makes sense that most of their moves in free agency were bolstering the defense. They added solid veterans across the defensive line, while also acquiring cornerback Carlton Davis from the Buccaneers. They should continue to look for help in the secondary, while a pass rusher across from Aidan Hutchinson would certainly improve matters for Aaron Glenn’s unit. The Lions should also consider adding to their receiving corps which, after Amon-Ra St.Brown and the still unfulfilled Jameson Williams, looks a little thin.

BALTIMORE RAVENS
The Ravens added running back Derrick Henry in free agency, potentially giving them the workhorse back they have not had since the end of the Ray Rice era. But the Ravens still seem to have a lot of holes that need fixing, and the draft gives them their best chance to do so. Their offensive line could do with serious shoring up, while they lost solid contributors like Patrick Queen at linebacker and Geno Stone at safety. Another wide receiver couldn’t hurt, and an addition or two in the defensive backfield wouldn’t be a disaster either.

The Super Bowl champions ensured that Chris Jones would remain a part of the team but traded away star cornerback La’Jarius Sneed to the Titans. The screaming need for players to make Patrick Mahomes life a bit easier was slightly assuaged by the signing of Marquise Brown, but the Chiefs still desperately need to upgrade the receiving weapons around their star QB. The offensive line remains an issue, especially at the tackle spot, and the departure of Sneed leaves KC a bit short-handed at cornerback.
